Visit Menorca

Why Visit Menorca

There are endless reasons why you should visit Menorca. Since 1993, Menorca became a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The unspoilt, glistening sands, turquoise waters and idyllic beach vibes entice holidaymakers to visit the island year after year, and we’re fortunate to have a collection of stylish Menorca villas within walking distance of the beaches. Menorca truly is a different world and one we highly recommend visiting.

The gentle landscapes are ideal for outdoor activities such as walking, cycling or horse riding – they’re a fantastic way to explore the island at your own pace. Stone monuments dating back thousands of years are scattered across the countryside, providing markers for a hiking holiday. If you prefer water-based activities, Menorca is famous for its range of water sports thanks to the beautiful beaches. Swimming, diving, snorkelling, kayaking, paddle boarding and sailing are just a few water-based activities that you can enjoy.

There are plenty of places to explore in Menorca, including Ciutadella and Mahón, both at opposite ends of the island. One of the most popular attractions of Ciutadella is the daily open-air market found in the Plaza del Mercat. On Fridays and Saturdays, the markets are held at the Plaza de Es Born. Please note, when visiting the markets, you must go in the morning as they open early and run until the heat becomes too much, which is usually around 2pm. Mahón is a Spanish town with little recognition to tourists, so an ideal visit if you want to escape the hustle and bustle for a few hours. The boat trips available are, however, popular, so need to be booked, as Mahón is rich in history and is home to one of the best harbours in the northern hemisphere.

Menorcan Beaches & Culture

There are almost 700 square kilometres of beach on the island and 216 kilometres of coastline. On average, there are approximately 300 days of sunshine per year and up to 12 hours of sun a day during summer. Spring and autumn are also fantastic times to visit Menorca. The weather is still warm and sunny, and you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful beaches without the summer crowds.

Nine kilometres from Mahón is Cala Binidalí, a small cove near the village of Binidalí. The beach at Binidalí is characterised by fine sand, clear blue waters and a beautiful natural environment. Villa Retreats has luxury villa rentals available in the area.

If you enjoy visiting the opera, then a visit to Ciutadella for Opera Week in May is a must, along with other summer music festivals to enjoy. Other traditional Menorcan festivals include the Festes de Sant Joan, which are held in June, lasting three days.

It’s not a secret that the Mediterranean diet is healthy, fresh, full of colour and flavour. Menorca is no exception. The diet is healthy, and the food is freshly prepared, so you must visit local eateries to sample some of the famous regional cuisines, accompanied by a crisp glass of Spanish wine. Some recommended traditional Menorcan foods to try, include Mahon cheese and the delicious and sweet flaons.
